Ask any trainer what separates dogs that make lasting progress from dogs that don't, and the answer is rarely talent, breed or age. It is consistency.

Dogs learn by pattern. If a behavior gets the same result every time, it becomes a habit quickly. If the result changes depending on the day, the mood or who is holding the leash, the dog learns something else entirely: that the rules are negotiable.

Why inconsistency undoes progress

Picture a dog that is told "off" when he jumps on guests, but gets a laugh and a pat when he jumps on you after work. From the dog's side there is no confusion at all. Jumping sometimes works, and a behavior that sometimes works is the hardest kind to stop. It is the same reason slot machines are so hard to walk away from.

Three kinds of consistency

  • Consistent rules. Decide what the house rules are, such as furniture, doors, begging and greetings, and apply them every time.
  • Consistent people. Everyone in the household should use the same commands, the same expectations and the same follow-through. A dog should not have to learn a different rulebook for each family member.
  • Consistent feedback. Reward the right behavior promptly and address the wrong behavior calmly and fairly, every time. Timing matters more than intensity.

Practical ways to build it

  • Write down your three or four most important rules and put them on the fridge.
  • Pick one word for each command and stick to it.
  • Practice in short sessions daily instead of long sessions occasionally.
  • Keep the routine predictable: meals, walks, crate time and rest.
  • Don't give in "just this once." Once is how habits start.

Consistency is also kindness

Clear, steady rules are not strict for the sake of strict. They are calming. A dog that knows exactly what is expected can relax. Many of the anxious, pushy and reactive dogs we see are simply dogs living in a house where the rules keep changing.

This is why every program we run includes training for the owner, too. Our board and train and obedience training programs end with a handoff so that what your dog learns with us carries into your home. Questions? Get in touch.
