How Long Is Board and Train? Knoxville, TN
The most common question we hear about board and train is how long it takes. At K9 Services Unlimited in Knoxville, TN, your dog stays with us for 4 or 6 weeks, receiving personalized, professional training tailored to its needs. Here is what that time is used for and how to decide between the two.
Why not a 1, 2 or 3 week dog training camp?
Short "boot camp" programs can look appealing, but learning a behavior and relying on it are different things. A dog needs time to learn a skill, practice it around distractions and in new places, and have it become a habit. You also need time to learn how to handle the dog, because the results only last if the owner continues them. For most dogs a few weeks is simply not enough to get all of that done.
What happens during the program
- Evaluation and plan. We learn about your dog and your goals and set up a customized training plan.
- Foundations. Structure, boundaries, engagement and basic obedience: sit, down, place, heel and recall.
- Proofing. Skills are practiced around distractions and in different environments until they are reliable.
- Owner training. You learn the commands, timing and routines so your dog responds to you, not only to the trainer, and you receive follow-up guidance.
4 weeks or 6 weeks?
A 4-week program suits many dogs that need solid manners, leash skills and obedience. A 6-week program gives more time for dogs with bigger challenges or higher goals, such as reliable off-leash control or deeper behavior work. Serious behavior problems may need more time, and for aggression the behavior modification page lists a monthly rate with additional weeks available. We will recommend a length after learning about your dog.
What does board and train cost?
Cost depends on the program and your dog's needs, so we quote each dog individually. Request a free quote and we will explain what is included. Read the full program details on our board and train page, and compare it with our board and train programs.
