Crate Training in Knoxville, TN
Done well, a crate gives your dog a safe place to rest, speeds up house training and prevents chewing accidents while you are out. Done badly, it leads to whining, barking and a dog that hates being confined. Here is how crate training works and how K9 Services Unlimited can help in Knoxville, TN.
Crate training steps
- Pick the right crate. Big enough for your dog to stand, turn around and lie down, but not much larger.
- Make it pleasant. Feed meals in or near the crate, toss in treats and leave the door open at first.
- Build duration gradually. Close the door for a minute, then a few, and increase slowly while you stay nearby.
- Leave and return. Practice short absences before long ones, and keep departures and returns calm.
- Exercise first. A tired dog settles much more easily.
How long can a puppy stay in the crate?
Young puppies cannot hold it for long. A common guideline is roughly one hour for each month of age during the day, and not much beyond a few hours even for older puppies. Puppies also usually need a trip outside during the night. Never leave a puppy in a crate for long stretches because it is easier for you.
Whining and barking
First check that your dog has gone out, has had exercise and is not in pain. Then reward quiet and calm. Letting your dog out when it screams teaches it to scream. If your dog panics in the crate, stop and get help, because forcing it can make anxiety worse.
Where we come in
Crate training is part of our puppy training program, where your puppy learns crate acceptance, leash manners, basic commands and impulse control. Dogs with separation anxiety or crate panic may need behavior modification. In board and train, your dog stays with us for 4 or 6 weeks and learns routines you can carry on at home.

Frequently asked questions
How long can a puppy stay in a crate?
A common rule of thumb is about one hour per month of age during the day, up to a few hours, with breaks, exercise and potty trips. Young puppies need to go out overnight too. Ask your veterinarian about your puppy.
Why does my dog whine in the crate?
Common reasons include needing to go out, being bored or under-exercised, fear of confinement, or learning that whining gets attention. The right response depends on the cause.
Is the crate a punishment?
No. A crate should be a safe, comfortable place. Never use it as punishment.
